Hungry for fresh produce? The 2017 season is just four months away!

While most people are enduring the ice and snow that keep impacting us in North Iowa, we are eagerly preparing for the next growing season.  Seeds have been ordered, blueberry plants have been pruned, and the high tunnel is being cleared for the next spring growing season!  We have decided to plant most of your favorite tomatoes, vegetables, and fruit again, but we will be cutting back on the Asian vegetables and strawberries.  Yes, we’ll have some, just not as much as previous years.  Be watching for more greens, blueberries, and aronia berries this next market season!  In the meantime, you can still order baked goods and jam from us.  We’ll be glad to deliver them to you in Mason City if the orders are over $15.

While we will not have CSA shares available this year, we WILL have market shares available.  Be watching for more details about this.  You will have the opportunity to pre-pay for your North Iowa Berries produce, baked goods, and jam for a discounted price.

In the meantime, here are a few pictures of last year’s produce – just to remind you how wonderful fresh, chemical-free produce is!

New changes for North Iowa Berries and More LLC

janette and jen market 2016Somehow this growing season has come and is almost gone already!  A huge thank you goes out to all our customers who helped us sell out almost completely at every market.  The strawberries, aronia berries, blueberries, and raspberries were amazing this year!  All that rain didn’t keep the sweetness away, although the weeds definitely thrived much more, making it harder for our family to harvest.  It was all worth it though when we tasted the amazing flavors that abounded in this year’s crops.

Because of our children growing up and moving on in different paths, we are changing some of our farm for this next 2017 season.  For beginners, we are sad to announce that we will not be offering CSA shares anymore.  Because we will be cutting back on our Asian vegetable and strawberry production, we feel that we cannot offer as great of a variety of produce we offered in the past.  Therefore, for this next season, we will be focusing on our sales at the North Iowa Farmers Market in Mason City and the Clear Lake Farmers Market.  You will still be able to purchase vegetables, fruit and baked goods off the farm also if you would like.

Because our strawberry field was very time consuming, we are very reluctantly pulling back on that.  We will still offer some strawberries at market, but we will be focusing much more on our blueberries, raspberries, and aronia berries.  Eventually we will have just June bearing strawberries and we’ll be phasing out our ever bearing strawberries.  With homeschooling, baking, ever bearing raspberries, and the younger children at home needing attention, it has become too hard to harvest the ever bearing strawberries every day through October.  We are sorry for the inconvenience this causes some of you who depend weekly on the strawberries, but we are confident that you’ll understand the importance of making sure our children get priority as they are growing up in their younger years!

Our baking business took off this year.  Therefore, we will now be offering that year around off the farm for those customers who order in advance.  During the next few months, you will see more information about that on our baked goods page.  We will also continue to offer our various jams and jellies that you have loved so much.

So – keep your eyes and ears open for future developments with North Iowa Berries!  The best is yet to come!

The 2016 growing season is quickly approaching!

The seeds have been ordered, the high tunnel has been cleared out, CSA applications are now ready online, and we are almost ready to begin our new little seedlings for the 2016 growing season!  It seems like we just cleared out the fields from 2015, but when we look out the window, we can see the fields and blueberry plants are enjoying the rest and chill time needed for proper growing in the next year.

Now is the time to begin ordering your CSA shares for the next season.  We are only going to be doing a limited number of them this year, so do not wait too long to get your application and payment in.

This year we will have a smaller crop of strawberries most likely.  However, it looks like we’ll have a nice large crop of blueberries, aronia berries, raspberries, pears, and apples. The peach trees appear to have quite a few buds too!  We also plan to increase our kale, beets, radishes, spinach, green beans, tomatoes, and snow peas this year due to the increased demand.

Once we get some cute little seedlings up and growing, we’ll pass on some pictures for you to enjoy.  Until then – enjoy this Iowa winter!!IMG_7084
